This house already had a Japanese soul: wood-beamed ceilings, sliding paper screens, a round moon window and a tatami room looking out to the garden. Rather than cover that with our usual look, we staged into it — a low tea table and woven floor cushions in the tatami room, quiet neutral sofas that let Lake Washington do the talking, and warm wood and soft light in every room.

Our default is Organic Modern: warm, modern, natural. When a house calls for something more particular — cozy, minimal, Japanese — we stage to the house, not to a template.
